We should be inspired by all things that make us feel good – who isn’t, right?

But, with hectic schedules and long to-do lists at the end of the day you just want to sit down and forget about doing anything for yourself.

But … When you look your best you feel your best.

That’s why we want to share these recipes.  They are not complicated and no blender is required.  The ingredients are readily available so it’s easy to make them apart of your daily routine.

DIY remedies are also natural and clean opposed to so many of the products on the market today that contain carcinogens.

Putting chemical laden products on your face will also speed up the aging process.  In the back of the book I have included a chart of the worst offenders and where you will most likely find them.

The remedies here will surely invigorate your skin and have you looking refreshed and years younger in no time.

The Potpourri Steam

This happens to be one of our favorite things to do for a spa like steam that cleanses the pores, brings the blood to your face and really gets the circulation going leaving your skin soft and radiant.

In a large bowl put in all or some of the following (it’s up to you) to equal about a ¼ cup of herbs:

Rose Petals

Spearmint or Peppermint

Chamomile

Rosemary

Lavender

Thyme

Sage

Orange, Lemon or Lime Peels (or all three)

Cloves

Cinnamon Sticks

Boil about 4-6 cups of water and while the water is boiling you’ll want to wash your face.  Once the water is boiling pour over the herbs and drape a large towel over the bowl and your head, like a tent, making sure your face is 7-8 inches away from the steaming water.

Wait about 5 minutes or until there is no steam left and pat your face dry.

Natural Cleansers

The purpose of a cleanser is to clean.  But we aren’t cleaning a dirty floor, we are cleaning our precious face so you want something that will do the job without striping away your natural oils.

Most of the facial cleansers on the market contain toxins.  Why would we want to wash our face with toxins?  It’s crazy.  Making your own cleanser is much better and healthier for you.

I have tried many homemade wash recipes that contained oil but it left my pores looking large and my face didn’t feel clean.

I have since come up with my own concoction that consists of milk and baking soda.  You can use powdered milk too you just have to add water.  It’s great for all skin types.

Why it works…

You see milk has salicylic acid which gently exfoliates your skin without leaving it dry.

Baking soda is a great exfoliator and will clean away debris from makeup and pollutants.  It’s also great for those blackheads.

Mix 2 teaspoons of baking soda and 3 tablespoons of milk and wash away the dirt.

If you want to leave the ingredients in your bathroom use powdered milk.  Mix 1 part baking soda to 3 parts powdered milk and keep in an airtight container for morning and evening use.

When ready to use pour into a small dish, add a little water, wash and rinse.

Medicinal Mask for Acne and Blemishes

We call this a medicinal mask because it’s made from aspirin.

The easiest method is to purchase the powdered aspirin like BC or Goody’s.  I’ve seen both brands at dollar stores.  But if you have aspirin at home and need this emergency fix you can use them by crushing several of them up.

The recipe: Use two to three packages and make a paste with water.  Apply a thin layer to your face and let dry.  Rinse and pat dry.  Repeat the mask every other day to clear up problem skin.

The aspirin works because it has anti-inflammatory properties.

Lastly, you can also spot treat blemishes at nighttime and go to bed with the aspirin but don’t call me in the morning.

Here’s the Scrub

There are so many natural ways to give yourself a good scrub.  The most important thing to remember with exfoliating is NOT to overdo it.

Once or twice a week is plenty and always use gentle circular motion while scrubbing.  Also, keep away from the eyes and rinse completely.

Because there are so many I like I wanted to give you a couple recipes to choose from.

A quick and easy scrub, which is great if you have some dark spots to lighten is lemon and sugar.  Cut a lemon in half and dip into sugar, gently scrub.  You can also use lemon juice and sugar.  Mix with your fingers and apply.

Prepare the mixture for future use and keep in the fridge.  Lemons are a great source of vitamin C and also helps to shrink pores.

Another facial scrub that I love I call the Coco Scrub.  It’s called that because I have combined coconut oil and cocoa powder.

Here’s the recipe:

2 tbsp of cocoa powder

1 tbsp of sugar

3 tbsp of coconut oil

Mix together and gently scrub your face.  You can leave it on for a few extra minutes while the caffeine goes to work on your collagen.  Rinse well.

Natural Toning Solutions

Here I just want to give you some solutions to be able to pick up the next time you are at the grocery store, Whole Foods, or a vitamin store.

There’s no recipe here just alternatives to the store bought toners that are hard on your face even if they feel nice.  Many have chemicals in them age your skin by harming your DNA.  And unfortunately they may also contain carcinogens.

If you feel that toning is important step in your beauty regimen then try these healthy alternatives.  Your skin will be happy for them.  Just use with a cotton pad as you would any toner:

  • Rose Water – Can be purchased at a vitamin store
  • Aloe Juice – Available at most grocery stores
  • Apple Cider Vinegar – Dilute with water (1:1)
  • Witch Hazel – Available in any pharmacy
  • Coconut Water – Available at most grocery stores
  • Green Tea – Make a cup and store in the fridge
  • Chamomile Tea – Prepare the same as green tea

Keeping a toner in the fridge also feels nice when applied, will help shrink pores and reduce puffy eyes.

Soothing Mask for Dry Sensitive Skin

Whether you are prone to dry skin, or you just have a case of winter dryness, your face will appreciate this recipe.

Ingredients:

1 Ripe Avocado

1 Egg Yolk (reserve the white*)

1 Tbsp Olive Oil

1 Tbsp Milk

Mash the avocado with a fork and stir in the egg yolk, olive oil and milk.

The mixture will be messy and you will need to apply it slowly on your face.  You may need to stay in the bathroom for a few minutes before it starts to dry because it may feel like it’s going to slip off.  But be patient it’s worth it.

Allow to dry as long as you can and rinse well.

*With the egg white, for an added treat and tightening treatment, dab a little around the eyes before you apply the avocado mask.

Oily Skin Solutions

If you have oily skin your sebaceous glands produce more oil than someone with normal skin.  I know it can be miserable.

But look on the bright side: your skin will not look as old as someone your age with dry skin because the oil is protecting you from wrinkling.  So when you are a little shiny remember what’s happening and smile.

In-the-meantime, you want to control the oil and shine a little.

The most important thing to remember is to not over-cleanse.  It seems natural and there’s a lot of advice out there to clean your face 3 or more times a day.

That is really the worst thing you can do.  You see the more you cleanse the more your body thinks it has to protect itself so it produces more sebum (oil).

  1. Keep the cleansers mild and wash only twice a day. Use a towel to steam and deep clean and stay away from exfoliating.
  1. Use a natural toner of 1 part apple cider vinegar with 1 part water – it will help balance your ph.
  1. M.O.M. to the rescue. You can use Milk of Magnesium (purchase at any discount store, grocery or pharmacy) as a mask when really feeling like you have to control the shine.  But no more than once a week.  Put M.O.M. directly on your face and let dry.  Rinse and pat dry.
Help for Large Pores

Your first instinct is probably to keep washing the area or even to use an alcohol type product to try to dry them up – Wrong!

This is the worst thing you can do because you will be putting your body into defense mode which means it will create more oil (just like in the section about oily skin).

The more oil you produce the more it gets into your pores making them look larger than they really are even if you don’t have oily skin.

Another reason our pores become enlarged is because of all the chemicals and pollutants our skin is exposed to.  We don’t realize how damaging the products which we buy to eliminate the problem are. And the chemicals in them make the problem worse.

We are also living in a more toxic environment today than even 10 years ago.  All those things buildup on your face which will cause your pores to be blocked.

So what you should do?

First and foremost do not wash your face more than twice a day.  No ifs, ands or buts about it.

Over-exfoliating will also cause your skin to become more oily and make your pores appear larger so exfoliate in moderation.

Once a week give yourself a treat and put a hot towel on your face (wet a towel and put it in the microwave for 30-60 seconds).

Try the potpourri steam from page 4 and the toner solutions on page 8.

Make a Pore Strip 

Ingredients:

1              tbsp of Knox Gelatin (or any unflavored gelatin)

2              tbsp of milk

Directions:

Mix the two ingredients together.  Mixture will be a little lumpy.

Microwave for 10 seconds.  Remove from the microwave and stir.  Moving quickly (the mixture turns to gelatin fast) apply to your nose, chin, forehead, cheeks or wherever you need to reduce pores.

You can apply the mixture with an old makeup brush or popsicle stick.

Allow to dry for approximately 15 minutes and peel off.

Reduce Brown Spots

Having brown spots (melasma) on your face – whether they come from the sun, hormones or aging – can make you feel bad about yourself and less confident.

For the best results apply any one of the following treatments twice a day and use zinc as a natural sunscreen to prevent the dark spots from becoming darker:

  1. Vitamin C – In the morning and evening, after you wash your face, rub a slice of orange or lemon on the area. Let dry and continue with your normal routine.
  1. Papaya Peel – After washing your face take the peel of a papaya and rub the inside over your face. Let dry for 10-15 minutes and then rinse.
  1. Onion – Yep, a few tears here but worth it. Juice an onion (with a grater or orange juicer) and use a cotton swab to dab onto your brown spots.  Let dry and continue with your normal routine.  You can juice the onion(s), put in an airtight container and keep refrigerated so

you’ll have plenty for your daily treatment and you won’t have to mess every time.

Being consistent with anyone of these treatments will fade your brown spots and soon they will be a thing of the past.

Natural Sunscreen

The sun has many health benefits.

It can lower blood pressure and reduce your risk of breast, colon, lung and ovarian cancer.  It may also lessen symptoms of asthma and help heal skin problems like psoriasis, acne and eczema.  And let's not forget about the Vitamin D it can supply for your bones.

But …  overexposure and multiple sunburns can damage your DNA.  It also photoages you,  breaking down your elastin and collagen – which holds up your skin – causing wrinkles to form.

So how do you get the benefits of the sun without the harmful effects to your skin?

Sunscreen.

But not just any sunscreen.  You see, many commercial sunscreens have cancer-causing agents in them.  And what's even worse is that the heat from the sun makes the chemicals activate which causes them to be more toxic.

Also, many sunscreens contain PABA which causes DNA damage – an anti-aging enemy.  That's all the more reason for making your own sunscreen.

You could just use zinc, but the non-nano type is difficult to rub in all the way without leaving a white residue.   Here's the recipe I mix up and put in those containers for traveling.

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil or almond oil
  • 3 tbsp of zinc oxide (I just eyeball this so it's less messy)
  • 1 tbsp of carrot seed oil (this really increases the SPF)

Melt the oil until its warm enough to mix in the zinc.  Mix in the zinc and store in your container
